LoRaWAN Gateway Architecture and Function
A LoRaWAN gateway is the network device that receives radio frames from field-level AU915 sensors and forwards them over an IP backhaul to a LoRaWAN Network Server. Every Milesight gateway in this range carries an eight-channel Semtech SX1302 concentrator, demodulates multiple spreading factors at once, and supports more than 2,000 end nodes per unit.
The gateway sits at layer one of a star-of-stars topology. Sensors transmit uplinks; the gateway timestamps each packet and relays it via Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or a LoRaWAN 4G gateway’s cellular link to the network server, which de-duplicates frames received by multiple units. Each device ships as a complete LoRaWAN gateway module rather than a bare concentrator card, integrating the radio front-end, host CPU, and an embedded network server.
That embedded server matters for integrators. A Milesight gateway can run a built-in network server or forward packets to The Things Stack, ChirpStack, AWS IoT Core for LoRaWAN, Actility, or Loriot. This flexibility lets you commission a single LoRaWAN gateway on-site and migrate to a centralised server later without swapping hardware.

Milesight UG65 Semi-Industrial Gateway
The Milesight UG65 semi-industrial gateway is the workhorse of the range, built around a quad-core 1.5 GHz processor, 512 MB RAM, and 8 GB eMMC inside an IP65 enclosure. Its eight half- and full-duplex channels receive and transmit simultaneously, covering roughly two kilometres in dense urban fabric and up to fifteen kilometres line-of-sight. This LoRaWAN indoor gateway suits plant rooms, riser cupboards, and sheltered eaves equally.
For BMS work, the UG65 LoRaWAN gateway exposes BACnet/IP (Building Automation and Control network over IP) and Modbus, so sensor payloads drop straight into your supervisory layer without a separate converter. Power runs over 802.3af PoE or DC, and Gigabit Ethernet plus optional 4G keep this LoRaWAN indoor gateway’s backhaul resilient.

Milesight UG67 Outdoor LoRaWAN Gateway
The Milesight UG67 is the macrocell of the range, sealed in an IP67 cast enclosure rated from -40 C to +70 C for unshaded Australian rooftops. As a LoRaWAN outdoor gateway it integrates internal LoRa, cellular, Wi-Fi, and GPS antennas, with two external LoRa antenna ports for gain when coverage is marginal. An onboard supercapacitor keeps the UG67 LoRaWAN gateway alive for roughly one minute during a power outage to push a last-gasp alert.
This LoRaWAN 4G gateway accepts PoE-PD, 4G LTE, and Wi-Fi backhaul with automatic failover, using the cellular stack shared across the Milesight 5G/LTE gateways portfolio. Listen Before Talk and an RSSI noise analyser keep transmissions clean in congested spectrum.

Milesight UG56 Industrial Gateway
The Milesight UG56 is the industrial LoRaWAN gateway for switchboard and cabinet mounting, housed in a rugged metal shell measuring just 110 x 75 x 24 mm. This industrial LoRaWAN gateway runs the same SX1302 silicon, connects more than 2,000 nodes, and penetrates roughly three floors vertically inside a building. A magnetic or fibre-glass antenna can be sited remotely for signal optimisation.
As a LoRaWAN to Modbus gateway, the UG56 maps payloads to BACnet/IP and Modbus and supports FUOTA for over-the-air firmware updates to deployed sensors. Power options include 802.3af PoE and USB-C, rated -20 C to +60 C.

Milesight UG63 Mini LoRaWAN Gateway
The Milesight UG63 mini LoRaWAN gateway is a disc-shaped picocell, just 115 mm across and 21 mm high, engineered as a LoRaWAN indoor gateway to fill coverage holes. Despite its size it still presents eight channels and a built-in network server for small deployments. Its Gateway Fleet feature lets several agent units relay traffic to one controller gateway - for example feeding a UG56, UG65, or UG67 in complex floorplates.
This LoRaWAN indoor gateway accepts 802.3af PoE via splitter, USB-C, or 5-12 V DC, and mounts on desk, wall, or ceiling. Operating range is -20 C to +50 C.

Milesight EG71 Building Gateway
The Milesight EG71 collapses a multi-protocol building controller and an eight-channel LoRaWAN gateway module into one DIN-rail unit. It reads field devices over two RS485 ports running BACnet MS/TP or Modbus RTU, a KNX/TP bus, and M-Bus (under development), then forwards north over MQTT(S), HTTP(S), BACnet/IP, Modbus TCP, or Modbus RTU over TCP. Eight universal inputs accept digital, 0-10 V, 4-20 mA, RTD, NTC, or resistance signals; four analogue outputs and three relays drive VAV boxes, FCUs, and actuators.
As a LoRaWAN to Modbus gateway with edge logic, the EG71 runs local automation in Node-RED or Docker and pairs sensors by NFC tap. The IP30 DIN-rail unit powers from 24 V DC/AC, 802.3af PoE, or USB-C and operates from -40 C to +60 C. Its plug-in terminals cut on-site wiring time against screw-fixed blocks, and a 1.3-inch OLED display gives field diagnostics without a laptop.

Milesight SG50 Solar Gateway
The Milesight SG50 is a solar powered LoRaWAN gateway for off-grid sites with no mains and ample sun. A 30 W panel charges a 25 Ah internal battery that sustains typical operation for up to four days without sunlight, at a draw of roughly 0.8 W. The IP67 cast-aluminium body runs -30 C to +70 C and applies low-temperature battery heating to protect cells.
This LoRaWAN 4G gateway backhauls over 4G LTE Cat 1, with Wi-Fi reserved for local configuration only. Note that AU915 does not support Listen Before Talk, so SG50 deployments on the Australian plan rely on duty-cycle and channel planning instead. This solar powered LoRaWAN gateway also suits smart streetlights, charging overnight and running on battery by day.

Australian Compliance for LoRaWAN Gateways
Australian deployments operate the LoRaWAN gateway on the AU915 plan within the 915-928 MHz band, governed by the ACMA Low Interference Potential Devices class licence and AS/NZS 4268 radio-equipment standards. Selecting AU915 firmware is mandatory; an EU868 or US915 unit - even a LoRaWAN 4G gateway - shipped from a generic reseller is not authorised for Australian spectrum.
In metered buildings, a LoRaWAN to Modbus gateway backhauls energy and environmental data to the BMS for National Construction Code 2022 Section J monitoring and sub-metering obligations. The same feeds support National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS) Energy and Indoor Environment ratings, where sub-circuit and indoor-air data must be logged continuously. Occupancy and people-counting payloads carried by the unit fall under the Privacy Act 1988, so on-device anonymisation and access control belong in your data-handling design.
Outbound: nabers.gov.au (NABERS Energy & Indoor Environment ratings).
Why Specify Qantec for LoRaWAN Gateways
Qantec specifies and supplies this Milesight range as an engineering distributor, not a box-shifter: each unit is configured and bench-checked before dispatch. Every gateway ships on the verified AU915 (915-928 MHz) channel plan, its channel mask checked against AS/NZS 4268.
LoRaWAN Gateway Cyber-Physical Security
Treat each LoRaWAN gateway as a managed network endpoint, not a transparent bridge. At the network layer, every Milesight gateway supports IPsec, OpenVPN, L2TP, PPTP, WireGuard, and DMVPN tunnels, plus firewall ACLs, DMZ, port mapping, and MAC binding to isolate backhaul from the corporate LAN. Place the unit on a dedicated management VLAN, terminate its uplink through a VPN tunnel to the head end, and disable unused services such as Telnet. At the application layer, LoRaWAN AES-128 protects the radio link end to end, while signed firmware and OTA update integrity guard against tampered images. Physically, mount outdoor units in tamper-resistant enclosures and log access. Restrict who can read the [occupancy and presence sensor](#) [Link to: Occupancy & Presence Sensors Sub-Category Page] feeds that traverse the gateway.
LoRaWAN Gateway FAQ for Engineers
How many sensors can one Milesight LoRaWAN gateway support?
Each eight-channel unit supports more than 2,000 provisioned nodes, but real capacity is set by airtime, not node count. A sensor on spreading factor SF12 consumes about twenty times the airtime of SF7, so high-rate or long-range fleets reach congestion sooner. Use Adaptive Data Rate and split load across additional units when packet loss climbs.
What frequency band does a LoRaWAN gateway use in Australia?
Australian networks run the AU915 plan inside the 915-928 MHz band under the ACMA class licence. The firmware must be ordered as AU915; mismatched EU868 or US915 hardware will not lawfully transmit here and will not align with AU915 sensor channel masks.
Can a LoRaWAN gateway send data to a BACnet or Modbus BMS?
Yes. As a LoRaWAN to Modbus gateway, the UG56, UG65, and EG71 expose BACnet/IP and Modbus directly, mapping payloads to objects or registers your supervisory system already polls. No protocol changes to existing BACnet devices or controllers are required, which makes the retrofit into a live BMS clean.
What is the difference between an indoor and outdoor LoRaWAN gateway?
An indoor LoRaWAN gateway like the UG63 or UG65 is a picocell: compact, lower-IP, and tuned for deep-indoor and multi-floor infill. An outdoor LoRaWAN 4G gateway like the UG67 or SG50 is a macrocell with an IP67 enclosure, wide temperature range, and higher antenna mounting for kilometres of open-area coverage.

Extended FAQ Section
What is the maximum antenna gain allowed on an Australian LoRaWAN gateway?
Australian operation is capped at 1 watt (30 dBm) EIRP across 915-928 MHz under the ACMA Low Interference Potential Devices class licence, so antenna gain is not unlimited. EIRP equals conducted transmit power plus antenna gain in dBi minus cable and connector loss, which means a high-gain fibre-glass element can push an otherwise compliant radio over the legal ceiling. Budget the whole RF chain before specifying an antenna, and remember that frequency-hopping operation must use at least 20 hopping channels.
Can a LoRaWAN gateway control an actuator or valve in real time?
A gateway can issue an immediate downlink to an actuator only when that end device runs in Class C, which keeps its receiver open continuously for near-instant relay and valve control. Class A devices receive downlinks solely in the two short RX windows that open right after their own uplink, so commands queue until the next transmission. Class B sits between the two, using gateway-beacon-aligned ping slots for predictable latency on battery power. Class C draws roughly 50 mW continuously and therefore suits mains-powered loads.
How is a Milesight gateway commissioned onto a network server?
Each unit joins a network server through one of three paths - its built-in network server, the Semtech UDP Packet Forwarder, or LoRa Basics Station - and Basics Station is the production choice because it adds TLS transport security and CUPS-based configuration and firmware management. The built-in server, configured from the gateway web interface, stands up a small network with no external infrastructure. For multi-site estates, point the forwarder at The Things Stack or ChirpStack and manage the fleet centrally.

Do these gateways need a PoE injector or a splitter?
The UG65, UG67, and EG71 accept native 802.3af Power over Ethernet, whereas the UG56 and UG63 take 802.3af through a PoE splitter rather than directly. An 802.3af source delivers about 12.95 W at the device, comfortably within each unit budget, and the outdoor UG67 is a Powered Device for single-cable installs. Where structured cabling is impractical, the smaller units also run on USB-C or low-voltage DC.
Where should the gateway antenna be mounted for best coverage?
Mounting height with a clear first Fresnel zone improves coverage far more than raw antenna gain, so site the antenna high and unobstructed before reaching for a higher-gain element. Long, thin coaxial runs add loss - often around a decibel every few metres - so keep feeders short or move to low-loss cable. The UG67 carries internal antennas plus two external LoRa ports, while the UG56 accepts a remotely sited magnetic or fibre-glass antenna.
How do you cover a deep basement or multi-storey carpark?
LoRa modulation penetrates roughly one to two levels of concrete, so for deeper structures you bridge the dead zone with a compact infill unit such as the UG63 acting as an agent in a Gateway Fleet, or a TS011-standard relay. The infill node relays traffic to a controller gateway sited above ground, extending coverage downward without a second backhaul. Position the picocell near a stairwell or services riser to exploit vertical propagation paths.
Which cellular bands do the gateways use on Australian carriers?
Specify the non-North-America cellular variant, which covers LTE bands B1, B3, B7, B28 and B40 - the bands operated by Telstra, Optus and TPG/Vodafone. The UG-series and SG50 use LTE Cat 1, more than adequate for gateway backhaul, and take a Nano-SIM. For rural sites, confirm the carrier 700 MHz Band 28 footprint, since it carries the longest reach.
Should I deploy overlapping gateways for redundancy?
Yes - install overlapping coverage and the network server automatically de-duplicates any frame received by more than one gateway, delivering N+1 resilience with no double-counted data. This macro-diversity also lifts uplink reliability in noisy spectrum and underpins time-difference-of-arrival geolocation. Size the overlap so a single gateway outage still blankets your densest sensor cluster.
Why does an outdoor LoRaWAN gateway carry GPS?
GPS on a unit like the UG67 exists chiefly for the precise time and pulse-per-second reference that Class B beacons and multi-gateway timestamping depend on, not for locating the gateway itself. Accurate timing enables beacon-aligned downlinks and time-difference-of-arrival positioning of mobile assets. If satellite lock drops, NTP over the IP backhaul provides a fallback clock source.
