Smart Lighting Control Systems Overview

A smart button is a battery-powered LoRaWAN end node that converts a physical press into an encrypted uplink, triggering a scene, actuator or alarm across a building network. The Milesight WS101 operates as a Class A device across eight regional frequency plans, including AU915-928, and supports short, long and double-press actions configured over NFC.

Across a commercial site, a smart button rarely works alone. Paired with the Smart Scene Panel range and the WS558 relay switch, the smart button becomes the trigger layer of full smart lighting control systems, where one press can switch a zone, recall a scene, or signal a duress event. A single wireless smart button can replace a bank of manual switches. The Milesight D2D (Device-to-Device) protocol lets a LoRaWAN button or panel command a relay switch directly, with sub-second latency and no gateway in the path — useful when lighting must respond instantly within a wider building automation platform [Link to: Building Automation Systems Pillar Page].

Milesight WS101 Smart Button

The WS101 is a 50 mm square node powered by a replaceable 2/3 AA cell rated for up to five years of service. It reports three press actions — short at three seconds or less, long above three seconds, and double — each mappable to a different LoRaWAN payload or D2D command. Functionally it behaves as a wireless smart push button switch, so the WS101 needs no back-box wiring and mounts with adhesive or screws. A red-button SOS variant ships for duress and lone-worker applications, while the white Scene variant handles routine wireless control. An IP30 enclosure, built-in buzzer and LED status indicator complete the hardware, making this button quick to commission over NFC.

WS136 & WS156 Smart Scene Panel

The WS136 and WS156 extend the WS101 concept into a six-button smart wall panel for scene recall. Each button on these smart wall panels can be assigned independently to either a LoRaWAN uplink or a Milesight D2D command, so one panel can drive multiple relay switches and sensors at once. Both behave as multi-gang LoRaWAN button panels with sub-second D2D response. Either panel can also report its own battery and tamper status. The WS156 carries a 2.9-inch black-and-white E-ink display at 128 × 296 pixels that re-labels scenes on demand and performs a weekly full refresh to clear ghosting; the WS136 uses a made-to-order PVC fascia for fixed labelling. Milesight WS558 Smart Light Controller

For switching, the WS558 smart light controller drives up to eight lighting circuits from one DIN- or wall-mounted unit — the switching backbone of centralised commercial lighting control. It ships in two wiring forms: an LN (Live-Neutral) type that adds per-circuit energy measurement, and a switch type for live-only retrofits where no neutral is available. Each channel carries up to 5 A at 100–240 V AC, with built-in overcurrent protection against short circuits and overload, plus power-off memory that restores the last relay state after an outage. As a LoRaWAN relay switch it accepts up to 16 D2D commands, so a wall panel or LoRaWAN button can switch entire zones locally. The LN variant resolves voltage to 0.1 V, current to 1 mA and energy to 0.001 kWh — feeding straight into circuit-level energy metering [Link to: Power & Energy Sub-Category Page]. Milesight WS523 Portable Socket

The WS523 portable socket brings the same switching and metering to plug-in loads. Configured for the Australian 10 A socket standard, it measures voltage, current, power factor, active power and consumption to ±3% typical accuracy, and trips on overload. A built-in capacitor fires a power-outage alert before the device loses power. Like the relay switch, it runs Class C for always-on downlink control and supports the Milesight D2D protocol.

The WS558 and the Milesight button range switch each circuit on, off or to an inverse state only — they do not dim. The controller is relay-based, with no 0–10V or DALI dimming output, so dimmable luminaires still need their own dimming line or a separate DALI gateway. For energy reduction without dimming, lean on scheduling, occupancy triggers and the 18-hour turn-off delay.

How far can Milesight D2D reach between a button and a relay switch without a gateway?

Milesight D2D rides the same LoRa radio layer as LoRaWAN, so a button-to-controller link covers tens of metres through internal walls and far more line-of-sight, scaling with the spreading factor you set. The controller's RX2 data rate and frequency must match the button for the peer link to work. No gateway sits in the path, but thick concrete and metal still attenuate the signal.

Is the energy data from the WS558 LN type or WS523 accurate enough for tenant billing?

No — these meters report to roughly ±3% typical accuracy and are not pattern-approved under Australia's National Measurement Institute rules, so they cannot be used for revenue billing.
