BACnet Controller Roles in a Commercial BMS
A BACnet controller is a microprocessor-based DDC device that reads field inputs, runs control logic and exposes its data objects to a building management system over BACnet/IP or BACnet MS/TP. Every ABB Cylon BACnet controller is BTL-listed as a BACnet Building Controller (B-BC) against ASHRAE Standard 135, the open protocol that lets multi-vendor plant interoperate without proprietary gateways.
A complete HVAC control system is built in three layers: field and terminal controllers execute equipment logic, an ASPECT supervisory engine handles trending, scheduling and the operator interface, and an open BACnet backbone ties them together. Choosing the correct BACnet controller is therefore a question of point count, protocol and where the device sits in that hierarchy. The field HVAC controller runs the loops; the supervisory BMS controller owns scheduling and trends. A modern ABB controller is a genuine smart HVAC controller — a freely programmable HVAC DDC controller, multi-protocol and BTL-certified — rather than a fixed-function box. A single BACnet MS/TP segment supports up to 128 master nodes, fixed by the MAC address range of 0 to 127.
